2-Year Spike in Roadway Deaths Cause for Concern

The Year That Set the Norm for American Car Crash Fatalities

1963 was a milestone in the United States regarding roadway fatalities. For the first time, that year marked the year that 40,000 people across the country had been killed in traffic accidents. This was largely due to the increasing number of vehicles, which were becoming more widely new in the country at that time, and a terrifying lack of vehicle safety equipment that was currently available at the time. The rules of the road at that time were certainly much different than they are today.

However, the figure of roadway fatalities in the country stayed at around 40,000 per year for nearly three decades following, sometimes jumping just above 50,000 deaths per year. It wasn’t until in 1992 that the death rate dropped below 40,000, and then immediately rocketing up and above the next year, remaining there until 2008.

Fatality Rates Are Lower, But Still on the Rise

2-Year Spike in Roadway Deaths Cause for ConcernThat year coincided with a major change, and ever since that time, the motor vehicle fatality rate has stayed under 40,000 deaths per year. It reached a low for the modern era in 2011 at 32,478 fatalities, and it seemed that the figure would remain at these lower levels into the future, but then something funny happened. The last two years of recorded data marked a dramatic increase in the rate of car crash fatalities nationwide.

No one is completely certain why this is the case, but in 2016, there were 37,461 motor vehicle crash fatalities reported in the United States.

Certainly, distracted driving is an easy target to which to assign blame for this rise in roadway deaths. People have become so engrossed in their technology -- mainly cellphones -- that using one behind the wheel has become all too common. It will be interesting to see what the data shows from here on, as roadway laws may be required to change in order to provide for greater levels of safety on American roadways.
