Highway Work Zones Are Deadly; Slow Down
Twenty-Three Work Zone Fatalities in New Mexico Since 2011
The New Mexico Department of Transportation has this message for motorists: drive safely and slowly through work zones on the state's highways and put down your cell phones.
That's because construction zones in the state have turned deadly.
From 2011 through 2016, there were 23 fatal vehicle crashes in work zones on New Mexico highways, and a total of 3,149 crashes in work zones, according to NMDOT.
Nationally, in 2016 there were 765 work zone fatalities, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
In 2016, two NMDOT employees, David Eggert and Anthony Rivera, were killed in a work zone crash.
And because this week, April 9-13, is National Work Zone Awareness Week, NMDOT is urging people to slow down in construction zones.
“Our Department knows first-hand how devastating work zone crashes can be,” said NMDOT Secretary Tom Church. “We always want to encourage safe driving – especially in work zones – because it can save lives.”
The NMDOT has these reminders for people driving through work zones on the state's highways and roads:
· Reduce speed.
· Put down the cell phone.
· Seek an alternate route or leave early if there will be construction.
· Look for workers, construction equipment, bicyclists, pedestrians, and other motorists.
· Be patient.
