On Wednesday, July 24, 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a mandatory recall of Allergan textured breast implants after determining the breast implants are linked to anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a potentially deadly type of cancer.
Allergan has confirmed it is recalling all BioCell saline-filled and silicone-filled textured implants and tissue expanders. Still, those who have received these implants may be at risk of a deadly type of cancer.

Cancer Linked to Allergan Breast Implants
Over two dozen countries, including Canada, France, and Australia, have already recalled the Allergan breast implants linked to cancer. The FDA has identified over 500 cases of the large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) linked to these breast implants, including 116 cases identified since February 2019. Of the known cases, approximately 480 are attributable to the Allergan breast implants.
Thirty-three women are known to have died, and of the thirteen deaths in which officials identified a manufacturer, twelve had Allergan breast implants when diagnosed.
Concerned About Your Cancer Risk After Breast Implants?
Patients who have these Allergan breast implants are urged to immediately self-examine for symptoms of pain, swelling, redness, or anything abnormal. The FDA is also assessing whether the risk applies to all textured breast implants. One theory is that the very texture of the implant surface allows a micro-environment for carcinogenic bacteria to thrive, ultimately encouraging a specific type of cancer.
For some time, physicians have routinely furnished their breast augmentation patients with information on the specific model of device implanted, but it is always available from the medical record. The manufacturer may be responsible for monitoring the implants or their eventual removal—or damages if BIA-ALCL or another cancer results.
