Countless Drugged Truck Drivers Travel the Roadways

Big Rigs Make Most Drivers Feel Uneasy

When you encounter a large commercial vehicle on the highway, it is only natural that you feel a little paranoid. You may find yourself wondering if the driver is focused and if the rig itself is safe to be on the roadway. This is only natural due to the massive devastation that often results from traffic accidents involving big rigs on New Mexico highways.

There are much more stringent standards of impairment for truck drivers than normal motorists. The blood alcohol limit of a trucker is much lower than a non-commercial driver. All truckers must also be screened for drug use before hitting the road. Despite these measures, you’d be shocked to know how unreliable these tests can be.

The Results of This Study May Shock You

Countless Drugged Truck Drivers Travel The RoadwaysThe Alliance for Driver Safety and Security, more commonly known as the Trucking Alliance, surveyed nearly 150,000 commercial trucking applicants, requesting that they provide a hair analysis test as well as a urine test. Hair tests are much more accurate when detecting drug use, but the urine test is the only method employed by the federal government and all that is required for screening potential truck drivers. In the study, the Trucking Alliance found that:

  • For nearly 9,000 applicants, the hair analysis came back positive for illicit drugs.
  • These drugs included cocaine, opioids, and marijuana.
  • Around 90% of those who failed or refused the hair test had passed the urine test.
  • Despite the employer disqualifying applicants who failed the hair test, chances are they found a trucking job elsewhere in the industry.
  • Projecting these results onto the general population of commercial drivers, around 300,000 truckers may be under the influence of drugs while on the road.

Congress is currently cooperating with the Department of Health and Human Services to develop standards for the use of hair analysis drug testing in the commercial trucking industry. However, until this happens, motorists will likely be sharing the road with hundreds of thousands of commercial drivers who are not fit to operate an 80,000-pound vehicle.

If you have sustained injuries in a crash with a big rig, it is nearly certain that they will be life-changing. You will want to contact an experienced New Mexico trucking injury lawyer who can help you obtain compensation.

New Mexico Trucking Accidents

Big rig collisions are a serious matter. These types of accidents are known to result in devastating injuries. In 2017, more than 4,000 people died in crashes involving large commercial vehicles.

These crashes overwhelmingly impact the occupants of passenger vehicles. 68 percent of all trucking fatalities involved occupants outside of the commercial vehicle. Injured victims may be able to recover financial compensation with the help of an Albuquerque trucking injury attorney.
