Distracted Driving is a Growing Concern

In recent years, distracted driving has become a massive hazard for those traveling on the road. An estimated 3,500 people were killed by distracted drivers in 2016. In many of these cases, drivers were sending or receiving text messages at the time of the collision.

Many distracted driving accidents are caused by cellphone use. There is a lack of states that currently ban the use of cell phones while driving completely, but many states have passed legislation that prohibits texting while operating a motor vehicle or even making calls manually while driving.

New Mexico Laws Concerning Distracted Driving

New Mexico has instituted a ban on the use of hand-held phones for state vehicles and drivers under the age of 18. This legislation also includes drivers who have a learner’s permit or provisional license. New drivers and drivers with learner’s permits are not allowed to use hand-held or hands-free devices for texting or making phone calls.

In the rural areas of New Mexicos, adult drivers can use hand-held devices to dial phone numbers and receive phone calls while operating a motor vehicle. Drivers in large cities such as Albuquerque, Espanola, Sante Fe, Las Cruces, Taos, and Gallup, however, are prohibited from using cell phones while in the driver’s seat.

The Consequences of Distracted Driving

Dialing or just talking hands-free on a phone can stop you from being able to place your full focus on the road. Texting while behind the wheel is particularly hazardous. On average, sending or reading a text message takes about five seconds. That may not seem like much, but when you’re traveling at a speed of 55 miles per hour, looking away for just five seconds is enough time to travel the length of a football field with your eyes closed.

Causes of Distracted Driving

When you engage in any activity other than driving, you increase the chances of being involved in a serious accident. For example, reading increases the chance of a serious crash by nearly four times. Turning around to look in the back seat of a vehicle increases the chances of a crash by nearly eight times. There are other causes of distracted driving accidents, such as talking on the phone and texting, which can be incredibly dangerous and result in severe injuries in the event of a crash.
