Heavy semi-trucks were involved in over 2,443 accidents in 2015, according to the Annual Traffic Accident Report from the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Sadly, 49 of those collisions resulted in fatalities. Compared to other types of incidents, truck accidents made up a lesser percentage of all vehicle collisions in New Mexico and were responsible for 10.7% of all traffic fatalities. According to the available data, there are more truck accidents and fatalities in New Mexico overall. Given the relatively modest level of travel that passes through New Mexico each year, these figures may come as a shock to some.
Losing a close family member is a moment that we never want to happen. Losing someone hurts us and those around us, especially if their death was caused by someone else’s carelessness. No amount of money could ever replace your loved one, but you might be able to bring a wrongful death lawsuit against the individual who caused their passing. In New Mexico, some people are permitted to bring these legal actions on behalf of a loved one who has passed away as a result of the reckless driving of another motorist.
You and your next of kin may be entitled to both monetary and non-monetary damages following a fatal accident. Financial losses may be used to offset expenses such as the medical fees for the care that your relative received before passing away. They might also pay for the deceased’s funeral and burial expenses. If your loved one had a job and made a financial contribution, you may be entitled to compensation for the loss of their income as well as the value of the services they would have provided.
