Low Gas Prices Indicate Elevated Risk of Labor Day Car Accidents

According to an article that was published by the American Automobile Association, the average price of gas today is a little more than $2.58 per gallon. That is 25 cents less than it was during Labor Day weekend of last year and five cents cheaper than this same holiday weekend in 2017.

AAA has asserted that this is because we are currently experiencing what might possibly be the lowest average nationwide prices for gasoline over the Labor Day holiday weekend in three years.

If you and your friends or family plan on taking off on an end-of-summer adventure this Labor Day weekend, you will probably discover that you are spending less money on gas. That means there is more money available to spend on good times.

Low Gas Prices Indicate Elevated Risk of Labor Day Car Accident

This means that the average person will have more money in their wallet and, because of this, it is more feasible to think that more people than usual are going to want to ride off into the sunset in search of one last summer memory. When gas prices go down and stay down as they are presently doing, more people are inclined to pack it in and hit the road.

With gas prices this low over a major holiday weekend, horizon-goers will likely be more willing to embark on that oft fantasized road trip. This is mainly because they feel like their money is stretching further so now is a good time to do something.

Local and State Police Departments, however, are cautioning eager drivers and doing their best to remind them that Labor Day weekend easily has the potential to be a treacherous and potentially fatal time to get behind the wheel.

In addition to hurried motorists and overcrowded roadways, one of the more widespread hazards that runs amok over holiday weekends is drunk driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gathered the following drunk driving statistics from Labor Day weekend in 2017:

  • 377 people lost their lives in automobile accidents
  • 257 accident victims out of the 377 who passed away were drivers
  • 38% percent of drivers involved in fatal accidents had alcohol in their bloodstream
  • 46% of drivers between the ages of 21 and 34 who died in traffic accidents had a blood alcohol level that classified them as drunk
  • 80% of deaths that are related to driving under the influence take place at night

The National Safety Council is predicting that here in 2019, there will be a grand total of 398 vehicle-related deaths by the time Labor Day weekend is through.

Reducing the overall amount of driving that you do over Labor Day weekend is obviously the surest way to minimize your risk of being involved in a car accident. Ideal solutions, however, are not always the most pragmatic.
