New AAA Poll Shows Aggressive Driving Is On The Rise

Fatalities linked to aggressive drivers have increased at an alarming rate. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that these deaths have increased by more than 500%. In the United States, there were 80 such collisions in 2006, while in 2015 there were 467. Sadly, aggressive driving is all too common in New Mexico, and most drivers have likely encountered an aggressive driver at some point in their lives. Chances are that they have also acted aggressively behind the wheel.

AAA Aggressive Driving Poll

New AAA Poll Shows Aggressive Driving Is On The RiseIn 2016, a poll conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety took a deeper look at aggressive driving habits. Almost 30% of motorists admitted to expressing anger while behind the wheel at least once the previous year. Tailgating (51%), yelling at other motorists (47%), honking the horn (45%), and making obscene gestures (33%) were listed as the most common acts of aggression. Some participants also admitted to engaging in more dangerous actions, such as purposefully cutting off another driver (12%), confronting a motorist (4%), or intentionally ramming another vehicle (3%).

Diverse explanations have been given for this rise in aggressive driving. One of the most notable is the increase in fatigued motorists hitting the roads. In many cases, drivers will operate a car without adequate sleep due to a busy work schedule. Stress in the home, relationship concerns, or stressful financial matters could also provoke instances of road rage. It is important that drivers practice courtesy to avoid roadway conflicts.

What to Do After a Crash With an Aggressive Driver

An aggressive driver may cause an innocent motorist to become a victim of a roadway collision. In some cases, the victim may be able to file a car accident injury case against the responsible party’s insurance provider. It is possible that their claim will be able to cover more than the costs of medical treatment and damage to the vehicle. In cases involving extremely negligent conduct, victims are able to sue for punitive damages. These go far beyond compensation for damages and are intended to punish the negligent party. You should contact an experienced New Mexico car crash attorney in order to see if you have grounds for a claim.

New Mexico Aggressive Driving Accidents

From 2003 to 2007, over 56% of fatal car accidents across the United States involved an aggressive driver. Even when you exercise caution on the road, car crashes caused by reckless drivers can still occur. The negligence of at-fault drivers puts others on the road at risk.

These accidents can result in severe injuries, leaving victims to cover the costs of expensive medical bills. In severe cases, aggressive drivers can cause the loss of a loved one. In these cases, the family is often left with a financial and emotional burden.
