Red Light Cameras Decline in Use Despite Benefits

It’s likely that you’ve been involved in a severe car accident involving a driver who ran a red light at an intersection in New Mexico. What you may not be aware of is that many red-light collisions can end much, much worse. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, in 2016, there were more than 800 people who lost their lives in red-light accidents. In large cities that have implemented red-light cameras at intersections, it was found that these cities experienced a 21 percent reduction in red-light fatality rates.

Benefits of Red-Light Cameras

Red Light Cameras Decline in Use Despite BenefitsHowever, the benefits don’t just stop with reduced roadway deaths. Red-light cameras can also reduce the number of red-light-running violations by nearly 40 percent. By taking pictures of drivers who violate the law and allowing law enforcement to send them tickets after-the-fact, it acts as a strong deterrent.

Yet the number of red-light cameras has been declining in cities across the country. In 2012, 533 communities had red-light cameras in place. Flash forward to 2018, and only 421 did. During this same time, crash deaths related to red-light running rose by 17 percent.

Why Is the Use of Red-Light Cameras on the Decline?

The cause of this decline is pretty straightforward. Some cities were taking advantage of cameras as a source for more revenue by installing them everywhere and even shortening the duration of yellow lights. Because of those actions, there has been a loss of public support in favor of red-light cameras. Some camera programs don’t involve the public as much as they should, and this can be alienating the communities living in these cities.

Legal Representation for New Mexico Crash Victims

Cameras can contribute to preventing car crash accidents, but if you’re involved in a crash, you’ll likely still be injured. Personal injury law in comparative negligence allows the victims of car accidents to recover lost damages even if they are partially at fault for the accident. Certainly, any degree of fault will decrease the amount of eligible compensation in accordance with your liability. You may want to consult with a qualified New Mexico car crash attorney to discuss your case and find out how this may apply.

Red Light Crashes in New Mexico

Traffic lights are meant to keep the roads safe for anyone. However, many drivers will blatantly ignore these signals out of aggression or inattention. Whatever the reason, drivers who run red lights are at risk of causing serious injury to themselves and others.

On average, more than two people are killed each day in red-light collisions. 28 percent of fatal crashes at intersections involve red-light runners. Injured parties may be eligible to recover lost compensation if a reckless driver is liable for the crash.
