More Americans are being killed by red-light runners than ever before. A study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that fatalities caused by red-light collisions have reached a 10-year high.

Fatalities have increased by nearly 31 percent, from 715 in 2009 to 939 in 2018. Red-light collision fatalities have increased each year for the past five years. The study utilized records on anyone who was killed in a red-light crash, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Why Have Traffic Light Accidents become More Common?

The study found that one key contributor is the fact that there are more Americans on the road than ever before. The Federal Highway Administration reported that the number of miles traveled has increased by 5 percent during the timeframe tracked in the AAA study.

Another contributing factor is distracted driving. The popularity of smartphones over the past decade has been associated with an increase in red light crashes. Distracted motorists are also responsible for the surging roadway fatalities, increasing 13 percent to 37,133 in 2018.

Compensation Available for Red Light Crash Victims

Red Light Crash Deaths Have Reached 10 Year HighCar crash victims may be eligible to recover compensation. When the negligence of another driver causes you to be seriously injured in an auto accident, you could be able to recover damages, including:

  • Past and future medical expenses
  • Past and future pain and suffering
  • Lost income
  • Punitive damages

It is crucial for New Mexico crash victims to understand the statute of limitations, which is the deadline for filing a personal injury claim, in the state is established at three years from the time of the collision. You could lose your right to file if the statute of limitations passes, preventing you from seeking deserved compensation.

Tips to Stay Safe at Red Lights

  • Come to a full stop at red lights. Brake slowly and stop far enough away so you can see the tires of the vehicle ahead of you.
  • Stop behind the line. It is illegal to stop past the white line or within the crosswalk. In the event that you aren’t the first vehicle at the intersection, make sure to allow space between your vehicle and the one ahead.
  • Yield to pedestrians and cyclists. In almost every case, they have the right-of-way.
  • Do not attempt to run a red light. It is illegal to run a red light, and doing so may cause you to be ticketed.  However, it also puts yourself and others at risk of being injured in a crash. If you are unable to safely stop for a yellow light, maintain your speed while traveling through the intersection.
  • Look carefully before accelerating. After the signal changes to green, look carefully in all directions before proceeding through an intersection.
