Santa Fe, NM - Crash Causing Fatality and Injures Passengers On I-25 Frontage Rd
Santa Fe, NM (August 29, 2019) - On Tuesday, August 26, at approximately 8:45 in the evening, the New Mexico State Police were called to investigate a rollover crash that led to a fatality. The tragic accident took place on the Interstate 25 Frontage Road and Metro Boulevard, near mile marker 276.
The investigation conducted by the Santa Fe Police Department indicated that a black 2006 BMW SUV containing a driver and two passengers were heading southbound on the Interstate 25 Frontage Road at a speed that was well over the legal posted limit. For reasons that have not yet been confirmed, the driver of the BMW lost control of the vehicle. This caused the SUV to veer off of the roadway and ultimately rollover.
The driver, Dominic Gonzales, a 21-year-old resident of Santa Fe, was ejected from the vehicle during the accident. As a result, he sustained injuries that would ultimately prove fatal. Just a short while later, at a nearby hospital, Mr. Gonzales was pronounced dead by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
The vehicle’s other occupants, a 23-year-old female, and an 18-year-old female, also residents of Santa Fe, received medical treatment at the site of the accident. They were then transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. Their injuries were assessed as non-life threatening but serious.
Alcohol is considered to be a factor in this fatal accident.
This accident is still under investigation with the Santa Fe authorities. No further details are available at this time.
We offer our sincere condolences to everyone involved in the accident. Our thoughts are with the other injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Drunk Driving in Santa Fe
On average, a drunk driver will get behind the wheel 80 times before their first arrest.
As worrying as the data on drunk driving fatalities in the United States as a whole can be, it is a fact that not every state contributes to this percentage in equal measure. In fact, statistics and research have gone on to show that New Mexico has a nearly unrivaled issue when it comes to drivers driving under the influence.
Roughly 34% of all Americans will be involved in a drunk driving accident in their lifetime. Whether it is as the victim or as the aggressor, only time will tell. New Mexico is one of the bottom four states in terms of drunk driving deaths, with an average of 5.47 alcohol-related fatalities per 100,000 residents. This number was the fourth-highest in the country, coming in after South Carolina, North Dakota, and Wyoming.
