Speeding & Drunk Driving Share Some Shocking Similarities

You’ve never driven under the influence and are more than aware of the dangers of doing so. However, you do push the speed limit at times. You just assume everyone does it. In the end, how bad is it really to go 10 miles per hour over the speed limit? Is it really that dangerous to go faster than the 45 mph speed limit when you think a 55 mph limit would work better for that road? You tell yourself that you’re just trying to keep up with the flow of traffic.

Regardless of how you try to rationalize it, speeding is a risk. Maybe even more than you may realize.

Speed-Related Fatalities

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, in order to find out why car crash deaths are not decreasing faster, researchers chose to study the cause of these collisions. Using a decade’s worth of data, the study found that, from 2005 to 2014, speeding was identified as the leading cause of crashes, resulting in 112,580 deaths. Effectively, speeding was responsible for just under a third -- 31 percent -- of all those who were killed in roadway crashes.

Drunk Driving Fatalities

You may find it shocking that drinking and driving caused 112,948 deaths during the same period. Technically, drunk driving did take more lives, but these numbers are extremely close to being almost identical. Drinking and driving nearly led to just as many fatal crashes as speeding during that 10-year span.

There Are Many Other Similarities

Speeding & Drunk Driving Share Some Shocking SimilaritiesThe NTSB report claimed that speeding shares many similarities with drunk driving. Both result in delayed reaction times and increase the chances of a crash. In both cases, the odds of a deadly collision also increase dramatically. The deadly victim could e the driver, but it could also be the passenger of another vehicle or someone near the road, like a pedestrian just crossing the road.

Usually, the penalties you’d face when caught speeding would be much less severe than what you’d face if you were found guilty of drunk or impaired driving. According to the NTSB, that should change, arguing that speeding should be treated more severely.

Other Risks

The risks of the road are very, very real. Some drivers don’t ever speed or drive under the influence. That’’s wonderful, but nearly all drivers have exceeded the speed limit at some point. If happens all the time. Even safe drivers are at risk because they share the road with these reckless drivers. You need to understand your rights in the event of a crash.

Drunk Driving Accidents in New Mexico

There were 1,037 crashes in 2015 involving drunk driving in the state of New Mexico that led to injuries or death. The state has one of the highest rates of drunk driving in the country. Nearly one in three traffic deaths nationwide involves a drunk driver.
