Taos, NM - 6 Injured in Collision Near UNM Campus
Taos, NM (August 31, 2019) - Two children and four adults were transported to Holy Cross Medical Center in Taos on Saturday evening, August 31.
All 6 people required medical treatment for injuries they received during a two-vehicle car crash right by the University of New Mexico Klauer Campus on State Road 68.
The two cars collided in the area where Highway 110 intersects with the state road, which is the turnoff to the campus.
The accident occurred around 5:00 in the evening over a holiday weekend, so it resulted in lengthy delays for Labor Day drivers traveling in both the southbound and northbound bound lanes.
The Taos County Emergency Services Chief noted that medics arrived at the scene in their ambulance in order to treat the injured and transport them to Holy Cross.
Both state and county police officers assisted in clearing the wreckage from the roadway and eventually allowing the backed up traffic to begin moving.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Car Accidents in Taos
Anywhere you go in the United States, the number of car accidents and car accident-related fatalities will vary greatly. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety annually publishes data that tracks a state’s population and compares it to vehicle miles traveled, accident fatalities, and deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
New Mexico is one of the few states where these numbers are shockingly high. In 2014, for instance, New Mexico’s population was 2,085,572, and the total vehicle miles driven were 25,347,000. The total number of fatal crashes was 337, and 383 of those proved to be fatal.
What all of this data translates to is roughly 18.4 deaths per 100,000 residents and 1.51 deaths per million vehicle miles traveled. These numbers are among the worst in the United States.
