What Is Hydroplaning & How Does It Happen?

Most people have experienced driving in a vehicle that has hydroplaned when traveling on wet roads. Hydroplaning happens when the vehicle’s tires travel on a thin layer of water, instead of on the surface of the road. What is probably most frightening is that hydroplaning can happen even if there is just a slight amount of water on the road.

Hydroplaning is very dangerous and a major contributor to trucking accidents in New Mexico. This is because, when the car’s tires lose contact with the road, the driver is unable to control his vehicle. Any sudden movement can cause the truck to go out of control.

Many studies have been conducted on the physics behind hydroplaning, and experts have recommended that drivers take the following precautions whenever there is moisture on the road:

  • Decelerate to a speed of fewer than 25 miles per hour.
  • Keep tires properly inflated and rotate tires as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Replace worn tires or those with visible damage.
  • Avoid puddles of standing water.
  • Do not use cruise control in wet roadway conditions.
  • Avoid braking quickly or making sharp turns.
  • Drive in the tracks of the cars ahead of you, when possible.

Trucking Accidents Caused by Hydroplaning

What Is Hydroplaning & How Does It Happen? At Menaul & University BlvdsEarlier this month, there were reports of a trucker who was involved in a crash after the trailer he was hauling hydroplaned. Reports revealed that the crash took place in the early morning hours during a heavy storm.

The empty trailer started to hydroplane, which resulted in the driver losing control of his vehicle, which went off-road and struck a barrier. The vehicle became stuck on the barrier, and emergency crews responding to the scene found the jack-knifed truck atop the barrier of the road’s median.

Law enforcement conducted an investigation into the crash, determining that the trailer had hydroplaned, which resulted in the trucker losing control of the vehicle. It’s unknown if the trucker will be facing a citation. Luckily, no one was injured in the crash.

Semi-Truck Crashes in Albuquerque

The forces involved in a semi-truck crash lend to catastrophic injuries. A majority of those killed in a trucking crash are those traveling outside of the truck in smaller passenger vehicles. An estimated 5,000 passenger-vehicle occupants are killed each year in crashes involving large commercial vehicles.

These massive vehicles require 20 to 40 percent more distance to come to a stop compared to a typical car. This means that even a slight second delay is enough to cause a serious crash. Those injured in a crash should consult with a New Mexico trucking injury lawyer. Will Ferguson & Associates can help you determine who is liable for your injuries.
