Chaves Co, NM – Serious Injury Rollover Crash Shuts Down US 285 Near Dexter Turn

Chaves County, NM (February 11, 2026) –On Sunday, February 8, emergency crews responded to a serious single-vehicle rollover crash along US Highway 285 South at Shawnee Road, commonly known as the Dexter Turn, in Chaves County.

According to initial reports, multiple callers alerted dispatch that a white GMC or Chevrolet pickup truck rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof. Witnesses indicated that multiple occupants were still inside the vehicle following the crash.

A Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived on scene and confirmed that three individuals sustained serious injuries. One female occupant was reported trapped inside the vehicle and required extrication by rescue personnel. Roswell Fire Department units and multiple ambulances responded to assist with rescue and medical care.

A medical helicopter was dispatched from Carlsbad to transport at least one of the injured patients. Authorities established a landing zone near the crash site, resulting in the closure of US 285 in both directions. Traffic was diverted onto Old Dexter Highway while crews remained on scene. 

The cause of the rollover has not yet been released. Officials have not provided additional details regarding the identities of those involved. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays as emergency responders continue their work.
