Chaves Co, NM – Serious Injury Rollover Crash Shuts Down US 285 Near Dexter Turn
Chaves County, NM (February 11, 2026) –On Sunday, February 8, emergency crews responded to a serious single-vehicle rollover crash along US Highway 285 South at Shawnee Road, commonly known as the Dexter Turn, in Chaves County.
According to initial reports, multiple callers alerted dispatch that a white GMC or Chevrolet pickup truck rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof. Witnesses indicated that multiple occupants were still inside the vehicle following the crash.
A Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived on scene and confirmed that three individuals sustained serious injuries. One female occupant was reported trapped inside the vehicle and required extrication by rescue personnel. Roswell Fire Department units and multiple ambulances responded to assist with rescue and medical care.
A medical helicopter was dispatched from Carlsbad to transport at least one of the injured patients. Authorities established a landing zone near the crash site, resulting in the closure of US 285 in both directions. Traffic was diverted onto Old Dexter Highway while crews remained on scene.
The cause of the rollover has not yet been released. Officials have not provided additional details regarding the identities of those involved. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays as emergency responders continue their work.
We hope all those affected in the accident make a full recovery.
What Injuries Are Common in Rollover Truck Crashes in Chaves County?
Rollover crashes, particularly those involving pickup trucks or larger vehicles, often result in serious injuries due to the violent forces involved. When a vehicle overturns multiple times or comes to rest on its roof, occupants can experience significant trauma. The risk of injury increases if passengers are not properly restrained or if the vehicle’s roof structure collapses during the crash.
One of the most severe injuries associated with rollover accidents is traumatic brain injury (TBI). Even if airbags deploy, occupants may strike parts of the vehicle’s interior or experience intense rotational forces that cause concussions or more serious brain trauma. Head injuries can range from mild concussions to life-threatening brain damage requiring long-term medical care.
Spinal cord injuries are also common in rollover incidents. The compression and twisting forces that occur when a vehicle flips can cause fractures to the neck or back. In the most serious cases, this may lead to partial or complete paralysis. These injuries often require extensive rehabilitation and can permanently affect mobility and quality of life.
In addition, rollover crashes frequently result in broken bones, including fractures to the arms, legs, ribs, and collarbone. Internal injuries, such as organ damage or internal bleeding, are also a major concern because they may not be immediately visible but can quickly become life-threatening without prompt treatment. Victims may also suffer chest injuries from seatbelt force, deep lacerations from shattered glass, and crush injuries if they become trapped inside the vehicle.
When extrication is required, as in many serious rollover crashes, the likelihood of severe trauma increases. Emergency responders may need specialized equipment to safely remove trapped occupants, and air transport is often used when injuries are severe. Even if symptoms appear manageable at first, a full medical evaluation after a rollover crash is essential to identify hidden injuries and begin appropriate treatment as soon as possible.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a serious truck or rollover crash, it is important to understand your rights and the options available to you. Collisions involving pickup trucks or larger vehicles often result in significant medical expenses, time away from work, and long-term recovery challenges. Having clear legal guidance can make a meaningful difference during this difficult time.
An Albuquerque truck accident attorney can review the details of the crash, help gather fundamental evidence, communicate with insurance companies, and work to ensure that all current and future damages are properly considered. This may include emergency medical care, rehabilitation costs, lost income, and compensation for pain and suffering.
