New Mexico is no stranger to car accidents, with a collision happening at least once every half hour in the state. Car accidents are a common occurrence across the United States, happening over 17,000 times per day. Unfortunately, over 7,500 people sustain injuries in these accidents each day, and more than 100 end up losing their lives due to the extent of their wounds. Car crashes have become one of the leading causes of injuries and death throughout the nation, and the number one leading cause of death among Americans aged 15-20.
Alarmingly, most of the car accidents reported in the US are the result of negligent driving. Drivers who drive their vehicles while distracted, intoxicated, fatigued, or at unsafe speeds are those who demonstrate driver negligence most often in the United States.
In New Mexico, the main reasons auto accidents happen are currently driver distraction and intoxication. Distracted driving is the reason behind approximately 400,000 car crashes per year and the cause of about 3,000 deaths. Additionally, intoxicated driving causes about 15,000 deaths per year, while speeding causes around 11,000 fatalities annually. With about 40,000 people dying every year due to car accidents, this means that the majority of these deaths are caused by negligent drivers.
