Vehicle crashes are the primary cause of fatalities and major injuries in the state of New Mexico, and they can occur any time you are on the road. In 2022, there were 466 recorded fatal car crashes in the Land of Enchantment. Approximately 36 percent of these crashes involved an intoxicated driver, contributing to a total of 170 fatal wrecks. With 143 recorded fatal crashes that year, Bernalillo County saw the most fatal collisions out of any other county in the state. Statistics show that many of these accidents involve unrestrained occupants. In fact, there were 180 people who were not secured at the time of impact who died in automobile crashes in the state that year.
