Carnuel, NM – Fatal Crash on I-40 WB Near MM 170
Carnuel, NM (February 25, 2026) – A fatal crash involving a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputy occurred on Monday, February 23, on Interstate 40 westbound near mile marker 170 at Carnuel, east of Albuquerque.
According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 5:00 p.m. while Sergeant Michael Schlattman was conducting a traffic stop on I-40 westbound. After he radioed that he had initiated the stop and exited his patrol vehicle, a semi-truck struck the rear of the department-issued vehicle, pinning him underneath. Sgt. Schlattman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to secure the area, assist with traffic control, and begin an investigation. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-40 were temporarily closed. Eastbound traffic reopened later that evening, and all westbound lanes reopened around 6:55 a.m.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Sgt. Schlattman’s family, colleagues, and all affected by this tragic loss. His service and dedication to public safety are deeply honored.
How You Can Stay Safe After a Crash in Bernalillo County
After a crash, you should always prioritize safety and prevent additional harm. Move to a secure location if possible and immediately contact emergency services. Even if injuries seem minor, seek medical evaluation promptly, as some conditions may develop hours or days later.
Document the scene safely by taking photographs of vehicles, visible damage, road conditions, skid marks, and surrounding hazards. Collect contact information from any witnesses if it can be done without endangering yourself.
Writing down details while they are fresh in memory helps ensure accuracy later. Medical documentation also creates an important record for insurance or legal purposes.
Remain calm at the scene, and avoid admitting fault or arguing with other parties, as statements made under stress can complicate insurance or liability matters.
If the vehicles are creating a traffic hazard and it is safe to do so, turn on hazard lights and use warning triangles or flares if available. Exchange insurance and driver information with all involved parties, including names, phone numbers, license plate numbers, and policy details.
Cooperate fully with responding officers and provide factual information for the police report, but avoid speculation about what caused the crash.
Notify your insurance company promptly with accurate information about the crash. Maintain copies of all reports, medical records, repair estimates, and communications. Consulting a car accident attorney can help you understand your rights, navigate deadlines, and gather evidence to support claims for medical costs, lost income, or other damages.
