Tijeras, NM: Main Roads and Highways
Tijeras, in New Mexico, sits along one of the most important transportation corridors in the state, making its road network a key part of daily travel throughout the East Mountains region. The village is located at the junction of Interstate 40 (I-40), New Mexico State Road 333 (NM 333), and New Mexico State Road 337 (NM 337), providing direct connections to Albuquerque and other communities in central New Mexico.
I-40 is the primary east-west interstate highway through the area and serves as a major route for commuters, commercial traffic, and travelers crossing the state. It also follows much of the historic path of U.S. Route 66 through New Mexico.
NM 333, often referred to as Old Route 66, runs through Tijeras and remains an important local roadway connecting nearby communities while preserving the area’s historic transportation heritage. N
M 337 begins in Tijeras and extends south through the Manzano Mountain region, serving residents, visitors, and local businesses throughout eastern Bernalillo County and beyond. In addition, nearby NM 14, known as the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway, provides access to Cedar Crest, Madrid, and Santa Fe.
Crashes in and around Tijeras occur on some of these heavily traveled routes such as Interstate 40, NM 333, and nearby mountain roadways including NM 337. The I-40 corridor through Tijeras Canyon carries substantial commuter and commercial truck traffic, and serious collisions have periodically resulted in extended roadway closures and traffic backups.
State crash records maintained by the New Mexico Department of Transportation show that traffic crashes continue to occur within the village and surrounding East Mountains area, underscoring the importance of safe driving on these busy corridors.
Drivers should always remain attentive to changing traffic conditions, elevation changes, curves, and weather-related hazards that can affect travel throughout the Tijeras region.
However, since I-40, NM 333, and other state and county routes and highways experience consistent traffic volumes, crashes can occur despite drivers’ efforts.
