There are many factors involved in serious car crashes, and some actions can even increase the risk of a collision. One such behavior is speeding. Any time a driver speeds, they become an active threat to everyone on the road, and speeding is known to increase the chance of a collision for many reasons. Speeding drivers are less equipped to control their vehicles, and the distance needed to come to a full stop is increased significantly. This potentially lethal combination has led to speeding being the leading cause of traffic fatalities in the past twenty years, contributing to more than one-third of reported roadway deaths in the United States. Nearly 25 percent of deadly car crashes involve high-speed impacts. Drivers who fail to follow the rules of the road should be held responsible in the event of a serious auto accident.
