Drivers will be more likely to speed when they feel comfortable in a given area, and New Mexico residents are known to exceed the speed limit. However, this careless behavior raises everyone's risk of injury on the road. Speeding motorists are less able to maintain control of their cars and stop in time to avoid a major car accident. In the United States, high-speed crashes claim the lives of tens of thousands of people every year, and over the past 20 years, speeding has been a contributing factor in about one-third of traffic deaths across the country. In 2020, excessive speeding accounted for about 35 percent of traffic fatalities in New Mexico.
