Albuquerque, NM (July 2, 2024) - One person was killed and others were killed after a crash involving an alleged drunk driver in the Albuquerque area on Monday, July 1. The deadly accident took place at the intersection of Coors Boulevard and Montano Road just after midnight. Local reports revealed that 21-year-old Jesus Sandoval-Martinez was driving north on Coors in a black pickup truck when he approached a red light.
Sandoval-Martinez did not slow down and ran the light, crashing into a black Tesla and a Toyota Corolla traveling west on Montano. The at-fault driver exited the pickup truck and fled the scene on foot. Witnesses chased him and held him in a nearby parking lot until authorities arrived. Sandoval-Martinez showed signs of impairment, and there were reportedly opened containers of alcohol in the pickup.
The driver was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, along with two occupants of the Tesla. The driver of the Tesla was later pronounced dead, with the passenger in critical condition. The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries. Sandoval-Martinez is currently facing charges of DWI homicide. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly crash is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
