Albuquerque, NM (January 25, 2024) - On Wednesday, January 24, a pedestrian was killed following a hit-and-run in Albuquerque. The fatal crash occurred at the crossing of 4th Street and Guadalupe Trail late that night at around 7:30 p.m. The victim was traveling on foot when they were hit by an oncoming motor vehicle.
The at-fault driver fled the scene without rendering aid to the injured party. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched. The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The area was temporarily closed while emergency responders were present. Local authorities are currently seeking information regarding the at-fault driver and suspect vehicle. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is in progress, and more information will be provided as it continues.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
A hit-and-run can be particularly devastating. In many cases, victims are unable to get the aid they desperately need, and the majority of fatal hit-and-run collisions involve pedestrians and cyclists, making up nearly 65 percent of fatalities. Nearly 18 percent of crashes in New Mexico involve drivers who flee the scene, and statistics show that the number of hit-and-runs is increasing nationwide. An estimated 682,000 hit-and-run crashes have taken place each year in the United States since 2006. Since 2009, the number of these accidents has increased by nearly 7.2 percent every year.
Losing a loved one is always difficult. Not only will surviving family members have to deal with intense grief, but they also have to grapple with financial and other practical concerns. These types of losses are often made even more painful when they could have been avoided if a driver had not acted negligently behind the wheel. Survivors may be entitled to pursue a claim against the at-fault party in the event of a deadly collision. These claims are known as wrongful death cases, and they are intended to provide the compensation that the deceased would have been owed if they had survived the incident.
