Pedestrian Accidents in New Mexico
Pedestrian crashes are common throughout New Mexico. According to findings from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the state was one of the deadliest for pedestrians. There were 103 people killed while traveling on foot in the Land of Enchantment in 2021. A total of 49 of these deaths took place in Albuquerque, and the capital city had the highest number of deadly pedestrian accidents in the state.
A pedestrian crash can be caused by a variety of circumstances. Children and the elderly are some of the largest demographics in these types of accidents. Pedestrians generally have the right of way on the road unless they leave a place of safety and enter the path of an oncoming vehicle. Drivers are known to cause pedestrian accidents due to speeding through a crosswalk, running a red light, or checking their phones behind the wheel.
No matter what contributed to the accident, it is likely that the pedestrian is going to suffer severe injuries. There is little outward protection provided to someone traveling on foot, and this means they are vulnerable to the full force of the impact. As a victim of a crash, you may be able to pursue compensation for both economic and non-economic losses. Pedestrians are known to incur thousands of dollars in medical bills, and a catastrophic injury can completely devastate your way of life. If you or someone close to you is hurt as a pedestrian, you need to be sure that you are able to pursue lost compensation with the help of a trained personal injury lawyer.
