It is not that unusual to see drivers in New Mexico using their phones while behind the wheel, and new surveys show that a significant number of drivers freely acknowledge doing so. The state has one of the highest percentages of distracted driving-related collisions nationwide. The most recent data indicates that distracted driving causes around 40.75 percent of all collisions in New Mexico—nearly five times greater than the national average. It has been shown that driving while distracted is just as harmful as driving while drunk, both of which are serious issues in the state.
