Curry County, NM – Hit-and-Run Crash Leaves Driver Fatally Injured on Curry Rd 4 & US-70
Curry County, NM (December 18, 2025) – Authorities continue searching for a driver suspected of fleeing after striking and killing a man who was ejected from a vehicle during a crash south of Clovis. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office reported that the fatal incident occurred at the intersection of Curry Road 4 and U.S. Highway 70 on Tuesday, December 16.
Investigators said the victim, 24-year-old Rogelio Velasquez of Bovina, Texas, was traveling on Curry Road 4 when he was involved in a crash on Highway 70. The collision caused Velasquez to be ejected from his vehicle. While he lay on the roadway, another vehicle struck him, according to law enforcement.
Evidence gathered at the scene led deputies to believe a third vehicle then hit Velasquez and left the area without stopping. Emergency responders transported Velasquez to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities have not released descriptions of the suspected hit-and-run vehicle.
The Curry County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash with assistance from the New Mexico State Police. Officials are asking anyone with information to come forward as they work to locate the driver who left the scene. The investigation remains active.
We offer our deepest condolences to the Velasquez family during this tragic time.
Fatal Car Accidents in New Mexico
Fatal crashes like this one often leave families facing sudden grief, unanswered questions, and serious financial strain. In New Mexico, collisions involving hit-and-run behavior frequently result in catastrophic injuries or loss of life. These cases often require careful investigation by law enforcement and can raise complex legal issues for surviving families.
Families affected by fatal crashes may be eligible to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. Possible forms of compensation may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses related to the victim’s passing
- Medical costs associated with emergency care and hospitalization
- Loss of future income and financial support that the victim would have provided
- Loss of companionship, care, and guidance for surviving family members
- Emotional pain and suffering experienced by loved ones
Understanding the New Mexico statute of limitations on wrongful death rules is important, as waiting too long could affect a family’s ability to pursue compensation. Hit-and-run cases can also involve uninsured motorist coverage or other legal avenues, depending on the circumstances.
Speaking with a lawyer can help clarify options during this difficult time. A wrongful death lawyer can review crash reports, coordinate with investigators, and explain what compensation may be available. Legal guidance may also help families navigate insurance issues while law enforcement continues searching for the at-fault driver.
