Cyclist Critically Hurt in Crash on NM-146 in Hidalgo Co., NM

Hidalgo County, NM (July 3, 2026) – A 35-year-old cyclist from Colorado Springs was critically hurt after being struck by a driver on Highway 146 early Thursday morning, July 2.

The collision happened around 4:30 a.m. while the woman was riding in second position within a group of bikepackers. She was airlifted to a hospital in El Paso for treatment.

A friend who has been sharing updates on her recovery said that the cyclist underwent surgery on Thursday and was found to have multiple fractured vertebrae, several cracked ribs, a broken arm, internal bleeding, a brain bleed, and lacerations to several organs. A second surgery was scheduled for Friday.

The New Mexico State Police believe the driver was traveling between 50 and 60 miles per hour at the time of the wreck. 

The investigation remains active.
