Las Cruces, NM (November 21, 2023) - On Saturday, November 18, a woman was killed following a crash involving a stolen vehicle out of Las Cruces. The deadly accident took place near Young Park late that evening near midnight. A local woman had reported her Hyundai Tucson as stolen, and authorities had spotted the vehicle several times during the day. The owner of the vehicle later saw the vehicle at Young Park, but the vehicle drove away on Walnut Street when she attempted to confront the suspects, who were reportedly in their teens.
The suspect driver returned to the park and began following the owner, who was on foot. The driver accelerated and hit the curb, causing the vehicle to overturn. This caused 20-year-old Leilani Solis to be ejected from the vehicle, and she was crushed underneath it as it rolled over. The driver and two other passengers fled the scene, and one of the occupants was taken into custody by authorities.
The 16-year-old driver is currently facing charges of homicide by vehicle. No additional information on the deadly accident is available at this time. An ongoing investigation into the fatal crash is being handled by local law enforcement officials.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Leilani Solis at this time.
In the event of a crash, it is possible for an automobile to roll over and cause far more severe injuries. The number of these types of crashes has increased over time, and some people believe that this is because sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and other top-heavy vehicles are becoming more and more popular. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that flipped cars are involved in over 2 percent of recorded crashes annually. Nonetheless, about 10 percent of all traffic fatalities nationwide are caused by these kinds of collisions. Because rollovers increase the likelihood of a passenger being thrown from the vehicle, most of these deaths involve unrestrained occupants.
A deadly collision can be devastating, and it is common for families of the deceased to be left with the resulting damages. It is important that you are able to make informed decisions following a fatal crash to ensure that you can cover any financial losses.
