Lincoln Co., NM – Officer Hurt After Driver Crashes Into Police Unit on US 285 Near Roswell

Lincoln County, NM (May 11, 2026) – A driver faces a careless driving charge after crashing into a New Mexico State Police vehicle on US 285 near milepost 179, north of Roswell, on Sunday, May 10. The incident occurred at approximately 12:10 a.m. while officers were managing a separate rollover crash involving a tanker truck.

Multiple agencies responded overnight Saturday after a tanker truck carrying sodium sulfide rolled over on US 285, blocking both lanes of traffic. An officer positioned his patrol vehicle in the northbound lane to block traffic and protect the scene while responders worked to contain the hazardous material situation.

While the officer stood outside his vehicle, he spotted an approaching car traveling at high speed and moved out of its path moments before it slammed into his patrol unit, causing extensive damage. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover fully.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the police unit refused medical treatment at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and the road reopened later on Sunday.
