Santa Fe, NM (December 14, 2025) – The Santa Fe Police Department is investigating a traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle that resulted in serious injuries on Thursday, December 12, at the intersection of Saint Francis Drive and Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe. The incident prompted an emergency response from police officers and medical personnel as authorities worked to assist those involved and secure the scene.
According to information provided by the Santa Fe Police Department, officers with the Traffic Unit were dispatched to the area at approximately 9:27 p.m. after receiving reports of a crash with injuries involving a motorcycle. Upon arrival, officers located a Chevrolet sedan at the scene and made contact with its driver. Authorities reported that the driver of the sedan did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.
Officers also discovered a motorcyclist lying on the roadway and determined that the individual was unconscious at the time responders arrived. An officer immediately began rendering aid and requested a paramedic unit to respond to the scene. Emergency medical personnel transported the motorcyclist to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Hospital staff later determined that the motorcyclist had suffered severe head trauma as well as significant injuries to the chest. The driver of the Chevrolet sedan was identified as a 16-year-old female who did not possess a full driver’s license and was operating the vehicle with a learner’s permit. A second occupant in the vehicle, also a 16-year-old female, was present at the time of the crash. Police contacted the parents of both teenagers, and the teens were released into their custody following the initial investigation at the scene.
Crash investigators from the Santa Fe Police Department Traffic Unit were called to conduct a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. The department’s Crime Scene Unit also assisted by processing the scene and documenting evidence. We extend our best wishes to the injured motorcyclist and hope for a full recovery as they continue to receive medical care.
Motorcycle Accidents in Santa Fe
Motorcycle accidents in Santa Fe can result in serious or life-altering injuries, particularly when they occur at busy intersections such as St. Francis Drive and Cerrillos Road. Motorcyclists are significantly more vulnerable than occupants of passenger vehicles due to the lack of physical protection, which increases the risk of severe trauma during a collision.
Common causes of motorcycle crashes include driver inexperience, failure to yield the right of way, distracted driving, misjudging the speed or distance of an approaching motorcycle, and violations of traffic laws. Intersections are especially dangerous because they require multiple drivers to make quick decisions while monitoring traffic from several directions.
Injury outcomes in motorcycle accidents are often severe. Frequently reported injuries include traumatic brain injuries, chest and internal organ damage, spinal cord injuries, fractures, road rash, and soft tissue injuries. Head injuries remain one of the most critical concerns, particularly when a motorcyclist is thrown from the bike or strikes the pavement or another object. Even with protective gear, the forces involved in a collision can result in long-term or permanent impairment.
Beyond physical injuries, motorcycle crashes can create substantial financial strain. Medical treatment may involve emergency care, surgeries, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and ongoing therapy. Victims may also face lost income if injuries prevent them from returning to work, as well as future medical expenses related to long-term care or disability.
When a traffic collision results in serious injuries, injured individuals may have the option to pursue compensation if another party’s actions contributed to the crash. Depending on the circumstances, a claim may seek damages for medical expenses, lost wages, reduced earning capacity, pain and suffering, and other losses recognized under New Mexico law. Understanding these options can be an important step in addressing the financial challenges that often follow a serious accident.
