How to Ride a Bike Safely in Heavy Traffic?
Wearing bright or reflective clothing, using front and rear lights, and adding reflectors to your bike can make it easier for others to spot you, especially during low-light conditions. Riding in a steady line and signaling turns early can also reduce confusion, since sudden moves can put you directly in a vehicle’s path.
It helps to avoid weaving between parked cars, riding too close to opening doors, or darting into gaps in traffic, since drivers may not expect a cyclist to appear quickly. Keeping a safe following distance, scanning ahead for hazards, and staying focused on the road can also help you react faster in busy areas.
Cyclists can reduce risk by staying alert at intersections and watching for turning vehicles. Many bicycle crashes happen when a driver pulls out from a driveway, changes lanes, or turns across a rider’s path. Leaving extra space near parked cars can also help prevent “dooring” incidents when someone opens a car door into a bike lane.
Even with safe habits, crashes can still happen, and injuries can be serious. Bicyclists may suffer head injuries, broken bones, road rash, and painful neck or back strain after being hit or thrown from the bike. Some symptoms can show up later, so medical evaluation and follow-up visits can help document injuries and support recovery.
