Grants, NM (April 24, 2024) - On Tuesday, April 23, a driver was killed after a crash involving a commercial truck in the Grants area. The deadly accident was reported on Interstate 40 WB near mile marker 49. Local reports revealed that a Honda passenger car was headed westbound on the interstate when the driver attempted to exit.
The Honda made a sharp turn that caused the vehicle to spin before coming to a stop on the roadway. It was shortly after that the vehicle was hit by an oncoming semi-truck. A passenger in the Honda suffered fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital for the treatment of sustained injuries. No other injuries have been reported at this time. The area was temporarily closed while emergency crews were present. No further information on the deadly accident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
Semi-truck collisions are known to cause life-changing and even fatal injuries in New Mexico each year, and these types of crashes can be absolutely devastating. Compared to a typical collision, the death rate in an 18-wheeler crash is significantly higher. In New Mexico, nearly one in every 35 semi-truck crashes ends in fatal injuries. When fully loaded, a commercial truck can weigh tens of thousands of pounds, and it goes without saying that if such a massive rig collides with a passenger car at highway speeds, the results might be disastrous. In 2022, there were 821 heavy truck crashes reported in the state, of which 235 resulted in injuries and 44 in fatalities. An estimated 30 percent of semi-truck crashes in the state end in death. If a trucking accident results in the loss of a loved one, you should work with an experienced attorney to pursue a wrongful death claim.
It is hard to manage the aftermath of a deadly crash on your own. To get justice, you must be certain that you are able to pursue a claim for compensation. Coping with a loved one's death is difficult enough. It is not your place to handle the financial fallout from a fatal accident. However, it is still necessary to hold the guilty party accountable in order to pursue justice and obtain financial compensation.
