Semi-trucks are massive and sometimes hazardous vehicles. A commercial vehicle typically weighs around 20 times as much as a passenger automobile. Approximately 1,400, or 3%, of the over 43,000 car accidents in New Mexico each year involve semi-trucks. However, the severity of truck accidents in New Mexico more than makes up for this small percentage. In New Mexico, non-semi-truck accidents typically result in 1 fatality out of every 130 collisions. A startling 1 out of 35 accidents involving semi-trucks and 18-wheelers end in a fatality.
When a trucking accident is the result of negligence—whether on the part of the semi-truck driver, their company, or another party—injured victims have a legal claim to compensation. Truck accident cases are different from other types of motor vehicle accident lawsuits in the law. They demand specialized legal knowledge, swift action to preserve evidence, familiarity with the transportation industry, and familiarity with the insurance companies that protect trucking companies.
Semi-truck drivers and the businesses that employ them must take extra care and follow stringent guidelines in order to prevent serious traffic accidents. These large rigs have significantly greater weight compared to passenger cars, meaning that truck accidents nearly always have more severe consequences. Trucking companies that cut corners on employing and teaching drivers, adhering to safety rules, and maintaining their trucks put the lives of people utilizing New Mexico's highways at serious risk of injury.
