A head-on crash is capable of inflicting life-changing injuries due to the significant force of impact that is often involved. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), head-on crashes are involved in nearly 14 percent of roadway fatalities and 27 percent of roadway departures nationwide. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that head-on crashes had a fatality rate of nearly 58 percent in 2017. This is shocking and shows just how dangerous these types of accidents can be.
A deadly crash can be completely devastating, and it often falls on those closest to the deceased to pick up the pieces. Losing someone close to you can be an extremely difficult time, and it is understandable if you are going through an intense grieving process following the loss of a family member. However, while it may seem like the furthest thing from your mind, you should consider pursuing legal action if you have any belief that the death was caused by the wrongdoing of another person. While it may seem strange to make someone’s death a legal matter, state law provides for those closest to the deceased party to seek compensation through a wrongful death claim.
These types of cases are often extremely complicated, and there is a lot on the line. You need to make sure that you are able to discuss your situation with a competent personal injury lawyer who has handled these types of cases in the past. This can increase your chances of making sure that the at-fault party is held accountable for their role in a deadly crash.
