Roswell, NM – Injuries in Deadly Pileup Crash at US-285 & Orchard Park Rd
Roswell, NM (March 1, 2024) – A multi-vehicle accident outside of Roswell on Tuesday, February 27, left one person dead and several others injured. The fatal crash took place on US-285 near Orchard Park Road that afternoon at around 2:30 p.m. Local reports indicated that a 46-year-old male driving a Ford pickup truck was attempting to cross the highway when he was hit by a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by a 43-year-old male.
Both vehicles were disabled on the northbound lanes. A 2019 Ford pickup truck hauling a flatbed trailer driven by a 64-year-old male stopped in order to avoid the initial collision. The stopped flatbed was then hit by a Nissan Frontier driven by 63-year-old David Pedroza of Roswell.
Pedroza suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. His 49-year-old female passenger was also hurt and transported to a local hospital for treatment. It was then that three additional vehicles collided after the subsequent accident, and one juvenile passenger traveling in one of those cars was hurt. No further information has been provided at this time. An ongoing investigation into the deadly crash is in the hands of local law enforcement officials.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Fatal Rear-End Crashes in New Mexico
Rear-end crashes rank at the top of most common collisions in the United States. Based on the latest crash data, there are almost 1.7 million rear-end crashes reported each year. The fact that driver attention causes more than 87 percent of rear-end collisions should not come as a surprise. Drivers who are distracted are less likely to focus on the road and run into other vehicles. You only have to take your eyes off the road for a second to cause a serious car accident. One estimate places the number of fatalities from rear-end incidents at 1,700 each year, making up an estimated 7.1 percent of all traffic deaths nationwide.
A deadly crash can seem almost impossible to bear. In an instant, someone close to you can be taken away forever, and you will be left with a gaping hold in your heart. It is even harder to bear when you later find out that someone else’s reckless actions caused the fatal accident. The damages resulting from a deadly crash can be significant. Just because the victim died, it does not mean that there were not losses that were incurred due to the accident. These are often left to the surviving family members to handle.
