Torrance County, NM (September 19, 2025) – A tragic plane crash on Tuesday afternoon, September 16, left one person dead and another injured near McNabb and New Mexico Highway 41.
According to the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around noon when a small aircraft went down in a field. Officials reported that power lines and poles came down during the accident, causing power outages in the surrounding area.
The crash claimed the life of a male student pilot. Emergency responders transported his female flight instructor to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that she remains in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
Investigators said a suspected engine failure caused the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been notified and will assist in reviewing the incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the student pilot and wish the instructor a full recovery.
Fatal Aviation Accidents in New Mexico
While many people think of roadway collisions when they hear about accidents, aviation crashes are some of the most devastating incidents in New Mexico.
Whether involving student pilots, private planes, or commercial flights, these crashes often result in catastrophic injuries or wrongful death. Victims and their families face overwhelming grief, medical bills, and legal questions in the aftermath.
Families dealing with aviation accidents may need guidance from a wrongful death lawyer who understands both state law and the federal regulations that apply to air travel. Like auto accidents, aviation cases require a careful investigation to determine liability and protect victims’ rights.
Aviation crashes can leave survivors with serious injuries that change their lives forever. These include brain trauma, spinal cord injuries, burns, and long-term disabilities. For families who lose loved ones, a wrongful death claim may help recover compensation for funeral expenses, lost income, and emotional suffering.
It is also important to understand the New Mexico statute of limitations on wrongful death law. Victims and families only have a limited window of time to file claims after an accident. Acting quickly ensures evidence is preserved, witnesses can be contacted, and legal rights are protected.
