Car crashes continue to be the leading cause of death and serious injury across the United States, and the same is true in New Mexico. In 2022, 466 traffic fatalities were recorded in the state, and about 122 of these fatalities were related to auto accidents. Nearly 177 of these deaths were caused by alcohol or intoxication. Sadly, many of the victims who were killed in New Mexico vehicle collisions that year were not wearing seatbelts at the time of impact. In fact, the data show that 180 unrestrained occupants and 106 victims who were restrained died in crashes in the state that year.
